ABOUT
Adventure Level 4
A real Arctic adventure. In a landscape characterized by tundra, barren mountains, glaciers, extreme light variations and an exciting wildlife, we have experiences in everyday life that are unparalleled in the world. On this exclusive expedition, we experience the start of summer in the snow with adventures from husky safaris, boat trips, snowmobiling and wilderness adventures. After a day filled with arctic adventures you can spend time in the architectural pearl of a sauna. The view is incredible, especially when a group of whales swim by. Waking up in arctic silence you are ready for more. You will encounter wildlife. There are 3500 polar bears on Svalbard and they regularly visit us at Isfjord Radio. You will have our protection at all times. As you press the gas, the snowmobile starts moving, but the roaring noise from the motor is not there. The only thing to be heard is “the Arctic silence”. The sound of absolutely nothing. Join us on a whole new way to experience the Arctic.
The sunny winter is the most popular time to visit Svalbard, and we recommend that you book early.
Information on Svalbard
Svalbard is a Norwegian Arctic archipelago at the top of the world with endless areas of pristine and raw wilderness. Svalbard consists of all islands, islets and reefs between 74 ° and 81 ° north latitude and 10 ° and 35 ° east longitude. Spitsbergen is the largest island in the archipelago, where Newton’s peak is the highest mountain.
A visit to the high-Arctic archipelago, midway between mainland Norway and the North Pole, is full of contrasts and great nature experiences. The Arctic silence creates a very special atmosphere, and you experience a tranquility you can hardly find anywhere else in the world.
Here at 78 degrees north, you quickly become part of the most beautiful Arctic adventure you could ever dream of. Majestic mountains, blue sea ice, endless glaciers and a rich wildlife dominate the landscape, which changes costume with our three seasons.
Who lives in Svalbard?
Only 1300 km from the North Pole you can visit the world’s northernmost urban community, Longyearbyen . Most Norwegians live in this small, Arctic metropolis, but also inhabitants from around 50 other nations.
Common to the 2100 inhabitants is that we call this place our “home” and the unity among the inhabitants is strong. Even in the middle of the city, you get so close to the pristine wilderness that it takes your breath away.
Although Svalbard belongs to the Kingdom of Norway, there are two settlements on the archipelago where most Russians and Ukrainians live. The modern mining town of Barentsburg has 450 people, while the Soviet ghost town of Pyramiden has less than 10 people.
A cultural-historical leap into Russian culture and architecture. Here Russian is spoken, Russian food is served and the architecture from the Soviet era is fascinating even for the most experienced globetrotter.
An archipelago inhabited by both polar bears and humans
Here in Svalbard we live with the knowledge that polar bears are not necessarily far away at all times. The permanent residents always have this in mind when they move outside the settlements, and carry weapons as protection against polar bears.
This is one of the few places in the world where you, for example, see something as unusual as mothers with prams and rifles on their backs. Everyone who lives here must show respect for the mighty nature we have chosen to be a part of, and we are all aware that we are guests in the polar bear kingdom.
The people of Svalbard today have come here for various reasons, some are adventurers looking for a new, Arctic adventure, others are scientists who have come to look at, among other things, the exciting geology, and still others are ordinary families who like to live an ordinary life in a non-ordinary place.
