Helsinki’s Favorite Cafes

Helsinki is full of unique cafés.

Here are few of our past TJD’s guest favorite

Levain

Bakery-Eatery Levain in the urban neighbourhood of Töölö as well as Punavuori is a restaurant with a bakery that is dedicated to the cause of carbs. Their selection of breads is on par with French bakeries. True to name their real wheat sourdough loaves levain, is what they pride themselves on. Levain offers local residents a casual and warm living room serving breakfast and lunch which you can also order as take away. A light dinner is also available at their Töölö branch. It’s an easy going place where you can just pop in to enjoy delicious food, fresh hand-made cocktails or a glass of wine with friends and colleagues, whilst you watch the world go by through their high ceiling windows. On Saturdays the Töölö branch offers a special breakfast menu with an array of savoury and sweet waffles.

Way Bakery

Way bakery is a charming little café is located in the heart of Kallio. This neighbourhood café, bakery and eatery by the Karhupuisto park specializes in sourdough bread, natural wines, all day breakfast, and lunch on weekdays. The establishment makes ample use of seasonal produce and offers newly revised desserts and pastries almost on a weekly basis.

Café Regatta

This quaint red cottage has to be one of the best places in town for a date. It’s hard to decide whether Regatta is best in summertime, when it becomes one big sun terrace, or in wintertime, when you can grill sausages on an open fire… Whenever you decide to visit, you can always enjoy the delicious cinnamon buns! P.S. You can also buy a souvenir Regatta hat knitted out of Merino wool!

Andante

Andante is a pleasant mix of a flower shop and café, a coffee and tea salon in the centre of town that is both modern and retro at the same time. You can enjoy both sweet and savoury snacks, not to mention the delicious raw cakes. At the back of the café you will find a big high table where you can work on your laptop. And who knows, you could find yourself leaving with a cactus or ficus tree as a bonus!

Roots

It’s hard to resist the temptation at Roots to take a photo of the impressive plant collection on the wall. It’s also hard not to revisit Roots again and again! The vegan salads and imaginative fresh-squeezed juices are healthy, pretty and delicious. By the way, you can also purchase the seat your sitting on – plus there’s a yoga room on the premises!

Ihana Kahvila

Ihana Kahvila, the “Lovely Café” really is just that: lovely. Housed in a converted container in the middle of the docks in Sompasaari, this tiny café is open in summertime only. In fact, the loveliest thing about this café is its enormous terrace, which affords beautiful views out to the sea. As there are no indoor facilities to speak of, the café is open in summertime “weather permitting”.
